Just announced on the Official Second Life® Blog (emphasis mine) :
We are aware of multiple issues affecting the whole of Second Life® and are working to resolve them as quickly as possible.
Please refrain from uploading textures or making any transactions for the time being. You may notice problems with logging into Second Life® grey textures/avatars, inability to Teleport, failing transactions.. among other things.
We will update this blog as soon as we have information to update with.
I know it’s not really like the metaverse is actually saying "Don’t buy Robby’s stuff, we don’t want him here", but with all of these "Don’t buy stuff" warnings having become practically a daily occurrence, for the first time in over 18 months I’m starting to worry whether I’ll make enough sales to pay rent on my in-world stores.
Okay, rant’s over. Sorry for the off-topic venting
[UPDATE] Just tried to view the Second Life® blog announcement mentioned above (because I followed the link while testing my blog in IE7), and discovered that when I open the SL™ blog in IE it tells me that the Lindens have no guns. What a relief, I was worried I might have irritated them today :

Hey guys, hurry please and fix this, we know you guys rule, but we have an event going on and no one is coming because they can’t TP in!!
lindens sure know how to screw up every damn holiday we have they just cannot leave thing salone and they really DONT know how to code
I can’t even log in….everytime i log in I crash back out!!!!!!
I am always torn between the desire to rip LL up and down for its inexcusably horrible service levels and defend them because they’re on the bleeding edge. The “beta grid” is where they’re supposed to test things, yet obviously defective system changes get made to the main grid with no testing whatever. Upgrades take place in prime time instead of the grave-yard shift like they’re supposed to. They still haven’t given up on their garbage of an excuse for an IPC stack (which is why chat and im messages can arrive out of sequence [which is impossible in a properly written IPC stack], and undoubted causes just as many broken transactions, etc.) and reimplemented it in TCP like they should have done in the first place. Ditto breaking Linden processing, which costs sellers and performers money which in the real world Linden Labs would be liable for. Banks and other corporations with large amounts of data are not allowed to provide such shoddy service and they don’t charge anything. I pay $40/m and I sometimes wonder wtf I do. But as I said at the start, they are doing what has never been done before. The amount of data and shared state information in Second Life is like no other on Earth and I do believe they are trying with what skills they do have. So I guess my overall reaction is: “AIEEE!!! NOT AGAIN! HURRY UP AND FIX IT. _PLEASE!_” Anyway, sorry for the rant, but geez. :_)
heh, sorry for the WordPress Errors, was testing a new plugin
It’s gone now, though.
And yeah… Seriously, I know that not everything is under LL’s control, but I sure would like to see this string of failures come to an end!
They cant keep it together for more then 3 days shut down your shop and move on. your better off anyway.
Heh – not just don’t buy stuff, but “Don’t try to TP to events” too. My nightclub’s supposed to be having its 2nd ever event right now, and nobody can get there.
Sciamachy Moran’s last blog post..Wedding
I totally understand. Second Life is awesome in many ways, and is breaking new ground, but it’s pretty easy to get frustrated when things are simply not working for long periods.
With a new CEO coming in “as soon as possible”, we can hope that there will be renewed enthusiasm “in the ranks”, and a stricter focus on reliability and performance. At least, that’s how I’m choosing to look at it right now
heh i cant even log in
I’m not convinced. I was basically just ranting (and am very surprised that this blog is serving as the de-facto sounding board due to comments being turned off on the official blog), but I have more than 20 shops in-world (if you count my wife’s), and thousands of customers.
I just wish that these problems weren’t totally killing my sales
I just told my wife about the “Don’t buy anything” warning, and she flipped
To be fair, Second Life is her only source of income (if you don’t count me, I mean), and she makes much more in-world than I could ever hope to.
For nobody to be able to buy anything or get in-world causes a much more dramatic and noticeable dip in sales for her.
Well, on the up side for you Daikon I came here to whine and found your blog and discover that you seem to provide much of what I’ve been looking for.
The ups and downs are part of being on the edge; it’s still worth it.

Ok Lindens, enough is enough. It’s obvious that whatever you are doing right now to maintain Second Life isn’t enough, so start looking for NEW solutions. Expand your resources. And don’t tell me you don’t have the money to do so, I know you make plenty and haven’t been spending it on any advertising for the game (as you should be)so get it together and make it work or sell Second Life to a company that will!
And I feel much more strongly that it’s worth it during the ups, haha.
Well, I guess you are right, the added exposure for this blog is unexpected but not unwelcome.
OMG.. i’m just glad it’s them and not my computer messing up.
they will fix what ever is broken and i’ll make up lost sales .. or not. as long as i don’t have to lug this thing back to the shop..
i’ll deal with the rest. SMILE FOR PETE’S SAKE!!!
KNOWN ISSUES
* Serious memory leaks.
* Grid instability and poor performance
* Teleports fail quite regularly, especially under heavy load
* Sim performance varies wildly (NOT due to client content either)
* Low FPS
* Serious texture latency
* World maps are very slow loading
* Crashes and viewer hangs and freezes
* Ongoing friends list issues
* Group chat totally borked
* Group Notices not getting to all members of a group
* Random animations starting out of nowhere (and no, not an attack)
* Sailing off into void space after crossing a sim line
* Did we mention crashes? Why yes, yes we did.
* Major bugs not being corrected month after month, year after year (prime example: llTargetOmega)
* LL spending time on items no customers really want or care about.
* LL totally ignoring customer voting results and @#$# well doing what they want anyway (prime example: voice… which was majorly voted AGAINST by LL customers).
* Absurdist pricing on sims and land (namely: $295 and $350 a month for a piece of virtual land is ridiculous. The only thing it does is stuff LL’s pockets with $$$ and keeps most people for being able to afford a sim).
* Total failure of LL to prevent minors from entering the grid, resulting in continual hassles with immature children (not that some of the “adults” are any more mature… it just adds to the problem and drama).
… and the list goes on and on and on.
Why list these things? We’re not just griping. We’re listing these things to point out issues that Second Life customers deal with every single day… issues that Linden Lab continues to ignore (or put on the back burner, or “it bothers us too” into the obscurity pile) year after year.
And then people wonder why there are constant gripes on the blog.
That would be why.
this is what i get after no bandwith and try to reconnecting
“waiting for region handshake”
anyone else experiencing the same?
Wow, i’m glad I saw this blog, I wouldn’t have known anything really. And here I was able to relog to try and fix some issues I was having.
this week has been so horrible they shut down the lindex so no one can buy lindens ……. so no one is shopping since tuesday……… i usually make 30 to 40k a day and yesterday was worst day i had in 2 years 2k all day…….. that does not pay the tiers..LINDENS WILL KILL YOUR BUSINESS…. beware do not invest large amounts of money in this virtual world
Fibber
Just kidding. But are you telling me you checked here first? That’s awesome, haha.
They did? I was not aware of that! I always buy/sell L$ on SL Exchange, as it’s reliable and very very fast, and for the amount of volume I need I have never had a single problem.
Holy cow, you make about 10x what I make! At least lately, anyhow. I haven’t seen a 40k day in 8 months or more.
I’ve often considered whether to buy an island, but the two big things that have stopped me so far are the fact that I’m not confident enough that I could monetize it enough to show a profit, and reliability (or lack thereof) could cause way too many problems for the “small guy” like me. I don’t have deep pockets, so I just can’t justify the risk at this point
And I worry that a new CEO coming, and with a much-discussed possibility of going public, that the focus of Second Life will shift even further away from us “small guys” that collectively contribute so much to this world. I hope my fears there are unfounded, but until I see something reassuring, those fears are all I have to go by.
Yeah I check yer blog like at least 15 times a day
O.K
First thing is first. With so many people joining every day, the fact that Char is up to her neck in B.S applications for volunteer/lindenship that can never keep their end up(that seriously makes it harder for those who want to do something besides protect other users
), and the fact greifers are FAR outnumbering those of us that are willing to put our accounts on the line to protect others… and we have nothing but weapons bought IN WORLD to help for the majority, that deosnt help either, since we have the “problems” with transactions here.
So its not ALL Linden Labs fault, it has to do with US(the users) of SL as well(allthough most i can think of is based on the SL codeing).
On another note, ther should be demi-lindens, in world, with the power to kick or temp-ban users, not that im whining, but an OFFICIAL linden police force(not sayin id joion though, too much paperwork) to deal with the in world greifers would be a DAMN good idea to cut down on the “IDIOTS” that plague Second Life.
Please refer to the following : The First Rule of Programming: It’s Always Your Fault
In all seriousness, I’m not blaming everything on the Lindens. I am quite familiar with hardware issues, network problems, and any of the myriad other things that can go wrong. Believe me.
But I reserve my right to rant about problems of this magnitude. I’m sure most of the people who’ve left comments feel the same.
I do praise the Lindens as well, though I admit not as often as I should. That just wasn’t my first reaction to this news, as I’m sure most people could imagine.
“Yeah I check yer blog like at least 15 times a day”
Stop living in the past and use RSS feeds!!
Wow. I can’t believe everyone who would normally post their complaints on the Linden Blog are coming here and dumping them. Some of them don’t even seem to realize they’re not posting on the official blog! I’m just waiting for Usagi Musashi to post here; then your blog will have officially become the Linden Lab complaint box.
So long as I don’t ever attract the attention of Prokofy, I’ll be fine.
I’d hate to actually feel compelled to ban people from coming here, but I’d do it in a heartbeat for Prokky.
Right, i don’t blame LL for everything ….
but i do blame them for publishing bogus failure reports in their blog, not informing their clients/users about whats (really) happening, not letting their users vent their opinions inhouse;
but i do blame them for letting a large number of serious bugs smother on for months while the entire staff apparently hunts down new phantastic features;
but i do blame them for running an application that they apparently have lost control over;
but i do blame them …. oh gosh … gotta run .. sl is up again
The other major thing is inventory loss. It appears to be quite common and is very frustrating. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about things just suddenly going missing from their inventory – whole folders, at that. Has happened to me too.
Quaintly Tuqiri’s last blog post..Luck of the Irish… err… I mean Malaysian lol
Yes, that has happened to me as well. Not as frequently to me as it’s happened to some others, but it’s no less frustrating for that.
Ah, thanks for the good “first laugh of the morning”. Yup, there’s plenty to complain about, but I’m not leaving, lol.
Okay, seriously, wtf!?!?!?!?!
There have been severe problems EACH DAY since I wrote this post, and despite the problems I’ve tried to “get back into” Second Life.
But I can’t log in now, so…
I’m honestly thinking I should have made my “vacation” longer
